What are the uses of heavy burning and light burning of magnesite?

2025-04-16

Magnesite is a natural mineral resource often seen in alkaline refractory materials. After calcining natural magnesite, the magnesium content of the ore can be further increased. According to the degree of calcination and processing technology, it can be divided into light-burned magnesite and heavy-burned magnesite, and the specific applications of the two are also different.

Let's first have a brief understanding of magnesite. Magnesite belongs to magnesium carbonate minerals and is the main source of industrially refined magnesium. Magnesite is white or grayish white in appearance with a glassy luster. Magnesite also contains iron or manganese components, which will replace part of the magnesium. Iron-containing magnesite is generally yellow-brown.

Dead Burned Magnesite

1. Lightly burned magnesite

Magnesite is calcined at 750-1100℃, which is called light burning. The product ground out by Raymond mill after light burning is called light-burned magnesium powder, referred to as light-burned powder. Since the burning loss of magnesite is generally about 50%, the magnesium oxide content in the ore can be increased by 1 time through light burning. Light-burned magnesia has high activity and is the main raw material for producing high-density magnesia sand. Light-burned magnesia is also used to make cementitious materials, insulation and soundproof building materials, and ceramic raw materials. In addition, light-burned magnesia after chemical treatment can be made into a variety of magnesium salts, which can be used in medicine, rubber, artificial fiber, papermaking and other fields.

2. Dead-burned magnesia

Dead-burned magnesia is made by calcining magnesia at 1800℃. It is mainly made of natural special-grade magnesia ore through flotation purification, light burning, fine grinding, high-pressure ball pressing, and ultra-high temperature oil vertical kiln calcination. After high-temperature calcination, the carbon dioxide in the magnesia ore completely escapes and has a high refractoriness. Dead-burned magnesia is a refractory material for metallurgy. It can be used to make magnesia bricks, chrome-magnesia bricks, magnesia sand, etc. It can be used to smelt special alloy steels and non-ferrous metals, and can also be used as high-temperature electrical insulation materials.

Magnesia ore is an important raw material for refractory materials. Whether it is light-burned magnesia or dead-burned magnesia, it is widely used in our lives.
